Lacrosse discount requested
The St. Catharines Minor Lacrosse Association is paying more for floor time in St. Catharines than most other cities charge, city councillors were told on Monday.
Board member Alex Digenis said St. Catharines charges $75 an hour while other municpalities from Pelham to Hamilton charge between $30 and $58. He asked councillors for a $25 discount, and promised that if the association gets a break, it will stop going outside St. Catharines to rent floor space.
He said the Conradi Tournament, which has been held in St. Catharines for 40 years, is being moved by its organizers to Hamilton because rental rates are only $45 an hour.
Digenis said lacrosse has a proud history in St. Catharines but the organization is financially strapped and needs a break. It has even eliminated athlete and team photos to save money, he said.
Councillors referred his request to staff for a report.
